FAQ

  • What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them.
  • Is there striking (hitting or kicking) in Jiu Jitsu?
No, Jiu JItsu is focused on using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat an opponent.
  • Do you do competitions?
Yes, but they are not required. BJJ is one of the fastest growing sports in the world right now and there are almost always competitions available locally. We try to organize the entire team to compete in 2-3 competitions per year, but individuals are always free to compete whenever or wherever they choose. Evolution Jiu Jitsu competitors historically have done very well in competitions, with the gym as a whole consistently ranked at the top in terms of points scored per competitor.
  • How long will it take me to get a black belt?
It varies considerably depending on time spent per week, previous relevant experience, etc., but on average a BJJ black belt takes 10-12 yrs. to achieve and a practitioner needs to be at least 19 yrs. old.
  • Is there a separate fee for belt promotions?
No, Evolution Jiu Jitsu's membership fee includes all promotions and belt tests. The only additional expense is the Gi (uniform) and competition entry fees if you choose to compete.
  • How old (or young) do you have to be?
Kids classes typically start as young as 7 years old and we have adults in the adult classes over 50.
  • Do I need to be in shape to start?
No, we have many people join for the express purpose of getting in shape and/or losing weight.
  • Is this like the MMA fights I see on TV in the cages?
No, that is Mixed Martial Arts, with practitioners typically combining striking arts like Muay Thai or Boxing WITH a grappling art like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Evolution Jiu Jitsu is NOT an MMA gym, we focus exclusively on BJJ (no striking).
  • What is the objective of a BJJ fight?
In competition you can win either by having the most points awarded based on achieving different scoring positions, or by submitting your opponent with typically a choke or joint lock and they "tap out." In kids competitions there are options for points only (NO submission) divisions. Evolution Jiu Jitsu teaches de-escalation and avoidance techniques as the first option in a real life scenario, as part of our broader self-defense and anti-bullying tactics.
  • How likely am I to get hurt doing this?
Again, we have members as young as 7 and those over 50. Of course there is always a chance for injury in any sport but we all have to go to work or school the next day. You will find your EJJ training partners exceedingly supportive and careful to minimize the chance of injury to either of you. Come by and watch some classes to see for yourself, or even better take advantage of the free trial classes.
